The ACDE (the African Council on Distance Education)
has prioritised two projects as central to its strategic direction.
These are the formation of a consortium of distance education providers
and the establishment of a quality assurance body. A workshop in
Gauteng earlier this year took these matters forward - Jenny Glennie
of SAIDE reports on her presentation to the workshop. |
Following telephonic discussions as well as
a face-to-face meeting in Potchefstroom, North West University (NWU)
requested SAIDE to develop and facilitate a workshop on programme
design with a particular focus on the development of appropriate
purpose statements. The workshop was run on the University’s
main campus over three days in February 2008 to develop a new comprehensive
programme description for the ACE: Life Orientation and ACE: Mathematics
Education – Tony Mays discusses the process. |
The first external evaluation of the IADP-
Affordable Access Project took place in April 2008. Colin Jacobs
from the British COuncil conducted the evaluation. Ephraim Mhlanga
provides feedback on his site visit to the University of the Western
Cape.

An earlier newsletter outlined SAIDE's possible collaboration with
UNISA's College of Agriculture and Environmental Science and other
stakeholders (from government departments and NGOs) in the development
of an exciting new programme on food security. The programme seeks
to develop the capacity, skills, and values in the context of food
security within rural communities to meet long-term goals of sustainable
development and poverty alleviation. Alice Barlow Zambodla and Christine
Randell report on a recent materials development workshop. |
