OER Africa and MedEdPORTAL have partnered to pursue
collaborative activities and projects.
MedEdPORTAL, a free peer-reviewed publication service
and repository for medical and oral health teaching
materials, assessment tools and faculty development
resources, is an initiative of the Association of American
Medical Colleges (AAMC). The AAMC represents all 133
accredited U.S. and 17 accredited Canadian medical schools;
approximately 400 major teaching hospitals and health
systems, including 68 Department of Veterans Affairs
medical centres; and nearly 90 academic and scientific
societies.
The partnership aims to expand the breadth and depth
of high-quality health education and assessment tools
in MedEdPORTAL, whilst promoting the concept, adoption
and implementation of open educational resources (OER)
in Africa. OER Africa will benefit from this partnership
through support in placing African-produced OER through
the MedEdPortal peer review process and locating OER
to meet specific curriculum/learning needs in African
health education programmes. In addition, it will have
access to opportunities through AAMC communication channels
(such as conferences, newsletters and mailing lists)
for OER Africa to engage the AAMC membership, in an
effort to open access to growing numbers of high quality
OER for use in African universities. OER Africa will
support MedEdPORTAL by encouraging its African institutional
partners to submit finalized health content to the MedEdPortal
to enable it to go through the MedEd Portal peer review
process. It will also use its African Health OER network
to assist MedEdPortal to recruit African academics to
become peer reviewers within the MedEdPortal.
This exciting partnership is likely to yield many positive
results as OER Africa works with the AAMC to focus on
harnessing OER. Visit the Health OER space on OER Africa
