What does fatal exception refer to?

Fatal exception - the screen will look something like this:

A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C15A3FDC in VXD
MCSCAN32(01) + 000194BC. The current application will be terminated

*  Press any key to terminate the current application
*  Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart the computer. You will
lose any saved information in all applications.

Press any key to continue

Cause: This is a result of two programmes conflicting with each other and at least one of them refusing to work any more. The best option is to press any key. At least one of the programmes with which you were working will then close. You will lose any work you have not saved. You could get a second such message immediately after pressing any key. Repeat the process (press any key). If this does not work, you may have to press the three keys, CTRL, ALT and DEL all at the same time (you will need two hands to do this). This message almost always results in a programme closing down.

Solution: To minimize the seriousness of this problem, save your work to disk regularly. Once you have closed the programme that had stopped working, you can load it again. If it still does not work, restart your computer. If the programme still does not work, it may have become corrupt and may need to be re-installed.
