Supporting professional development of higher education professionals

About OER Africa

We believe Open Educational Resources bring quality learning to all.

OER Africa’s mission is to improve African universities' abilities to use Open Educational Resources effectively, to support quality teaching and learning.

Founded in 2008 with support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, OER Africa is dedicated to fostering collaboration aimed at enhancing the professional competencies and skills of stakeholders within African higher education institutions. This work empowers them to implement OER practices that elevate the quality of teaching and learning

What we do

We empower higher education professionals

OER Africa builds active networks of African OER practitioners by connecting educators, academics, librarians, trainers, and policy-makers to create, share, and adapt OER that address the educational needs of African societies.

Through in-person and online collaboration, OER Africa helps higher education professionals educators and learners in Africa use OER to grow their skills and become active members of global OER networks, showcasing Africa’s intellectual contributions rather than relying on knowledge created elsewhere.

We are currently

Developing and testing effective models of continuous professional development for supporting OER practices in higher education institutions, including  delivering CPD frameworks for academics

Collaborating with African universities to foster policy and institutional environments that support effective, continuous professional development implementation

Developing an online collection of continuous professional development  OER in higher education, such as the South African Advanced Diploma in Technical and Vocational Teaching, with the University of the Free State

Establishing a continuous professional development  network to share lessons learned
